Apology: I’m going to get really complicated…
Every forum has its own reputation, and like many, I think Hello! Online is one of the friendliest H!P spheres. Reality is, things get difficult if you get your daily news from forums other than H!O. You browse through those forums, and if you just happen to read something unpleasant concerning your favorite member, you might do one of a few things: (1) Whatever, keep scrolling, (2) BASHBASHBASH, or (3) Defend your favorite member constructively.
I’m okay with certain types of bashing, so if I see something blunt like “Eri is annoying,” or “Ai is boring” I scroll over it. BUT there are exceptions. If the post is not only unpleasant, but clearly contains some sort of error which I will explain in a moment, I get all defensive about it. I don’t want to leave that comment hanging there as if I’m OK with it, neither do I want to start a war and put myself under the danger of virtual exile, so I try to write up something as unbiased as possible with back-up evidence.
Most Commonly Made Mistakes
It’s crazy how I read forums at night trying to think of a reasonable response, then go to Sociology the next morning receiving the exact definitions I need. So let’s get educational for a little bit:
Attribution error- when we attribute characteristics to someone because those characteristics stand out to one person but are not necessarily their dominating traits
Confirmation bias- when we lean toward an opinion, looking at one evidence that supports our belief while overlooking the bulk of evidence that disconfirms it
My pet peeve, as you can probably guess already, is seeing anything that contains attribution error and/or confirmation bias, especially when it concerns a favorite member. It’s misleading. What if other readers who have had no prior knowledge actually comes to believe that it’s true? Ouch, her reputation’s ruined right there. But I’ve tried stopping it.
Reason vs Error
In the past few months, I’ve had to defend for Ai, Eri, and Sayu in the forums and on YouTube. I’m going to throw in some examples, and please understand that I’m not trying to indirectly taunt those whom I’ve spoken up against, though I would really like them to view matters from my perspective (that’s the purpose of this post, not venting..).
Let’s say you’re a 7th or 8th gen fan, and you’ve never really paid attention to the 6th gen. You begin watching HaroMoni@ sometime after Miki left, when all the corners of the show have changed to liar game or challenge the king. You just happen to be watching one episode where Eri is rarely speaking and completely zoned out like Sachi Usue, and before you know it, this is exactly what you’re thinking: Wow. Eri is way too shy. She needs to learn how to do her job!
There’s attribution error for you: Attributing shyness to Eri because you noticed that she was quiet. Add to that some confirmation bias: Evidence that she’s quiet in this episode confirms the fact that she’s shy, but what about all the other HM@ episodes? To avoid fundamental attribution error, we must consider situtation factors. This is a habit for those who always consider situation factors. Likewise, it’s the same for fans who have followed Eri because they would wonder if she was feeling bad that day or something along that line. Had it been 2003, we would have all agreed with “Wow. Eri is way too shy.”
Positive Statements with Confirmation Bias
(This isn’t bias like “so-and-so is the best MM member ever!”) Please bear with me. I’m going to provide one more example to make sure that I myself am not committing error or bias when I say so-and-so’s statements contain error and bias (omgosh I really hope that didn’t confuse you even more). Let’s say you’re still that 7th or 8th gen fan, and you’re watching one of the recent episodes. You realize that Eri is saying a lot more things than she has on previous episodes. Wow. Eri is learning how to speak up!
BAM, there goes another confirmation bias. Before I spotted that statement in the forums, I had just finished watching the same episode and mentally jotted my opinions on it. When I finished reading that statement, I thought it would be the best example I have of error and bias. You can clearly see the difference between the thoughts of someone who has followed Eri and the thoughts of someone who has recently started noticing. All I thought was, “lol Eri was great. When in the world did she learn how to ride unicycles?!” And the other person said she was proud of Eri beginning to speak up. Do you notice the difference?
You know, I don’t think Eri is a total extrovert even after she’s broken out of her shell and shown the audience her…other side (tekitou, KY, bokeboke – you name it), but she has definitely learned how to speak up long since the Eriku Kamezou era.
Let’s Widen Our Perspectives
Seriously, because all are entitled to their own opinions, even if I throw this post at them, it becomes difficult for anyone to realize that they’re judging falsely. Plus, who would want to read all of this… -_-; But for those who have made it through, I give you my deepest thanks. I hope you have gotten something out of it, if anything. For those who have never made it, I’m sorry, but my defensive tendencies are going to become your biggest pet peeve. So let’s try to lessen the possibility of being annoyed in the hope that soon, we will all learn to widen our perspectives eventually.
well its understandable that you would want to defend a member cuz of all complicating junk you said. But still, it’s not their fault that they say thing like that cuz of one ep.
I myself found out bout MoMusu by 2nd Gen Tanpopo with the single Koi wo Shichaimashita. That was around 2005, and at that time i thought that Tanpopo was still around even though 2nd Gen Tanpopo finished in the end of 2001.
Than when I started searching around in wiki that they were from a bigger group called ‘Morning Musume’ which didn’t really interest me at the time (idiot me), since I was so consumed in by Tanpopo.
And after about a week I checked out MoMusu out of curiosity, only to find out that not only did they have way more members than Tanpopo, that my favorite member, Iida Kaori, had ‘graduated’ from MoMusu.
All this new information like ‘graduations’ and ‘Hello!Morning’ (which had almost 300 eps at the time), and all these other members like Nakazawa Yuko, Yoshizawa Hitomi, Kamei Eri(who I found absolutely adorable) and a huge number of other girls that I didn’t know about, overwhelmed me a little bit.
You have to take into consideration though that even if that person (which your making it look like he/she is totally and absolutely new to MoMusu) is making these comments one of your favorite members, that theres all this other information that he/she has to find out. Plus the fact that HaroMoni@ use to be Hello!Morning which is totally different from the shows now.
lolol Think thas a lil much? ^^;;…. haha anywho, jus a little exchange since you gave us all so much to read (not to mention, you also have so much more from past posts..which I also read >_>)
I’m not a very literate person, so pardon me since my vocabulary isn’t as…fluent as yours =p
I look forward to your future posts! c ya, off to bed, got work in the mornin =.=;
@Wingates: I really do appreciate your well thought-out reply, and it’s very fluent to me. :]
The thing is…before I read those comments coming from this person, I had GREAT respect for that person. I knew that person has been following H!P ever since the start, Morning Coffee, and probably knows more history than I do. And that’s what shocked me when that person made those comments.
I must thank you for what you’ve written though, as it’s a good reminder for me. :]
Hello Online is really the only forum worth visiting, imho. Sure, it’s kind of strictly moderated, but that’s necessary to prevent scrolling down to a badly photoshopped picture of Takahashi Ai merged with a monkey or a post like, “OMG I HATE SAYUMI SHE SUCKS SO MUCH AND I DON’T SEE HOW ANYONE COULD LIKE HER AND I HOPE SHE DIES!!”
Not my cup of tea. If someone has opinions like that they should be kept to their own blog, not a public forum.
Okay, I made it all the way through. Go me. lol
Anyways…
I know what you mean about defending members. You know me, I have got alot to defend with my favs xD. I’m constantly sticking up for Koharu and the 8th Gen, which doesn’t meant I’m new to MM. I’ve been with MM since The Peace! (hohoho) and they just happen to fall into my good graces. I find it extremely difficult to defend new members. I know no more about them than others do for one thing, most of my defense is like “Give them a chance, let them show us their potential”.
I also hate it when people make false assumptions based on one event. But the thing is, first impressions are hard to see over. I find it hard to get over my first impression of some of the members even today. It could be something as simple as their facial expressions, but I will never really get over it. All the same, I try to respect other peoples views. I wish everyone extened that same ..kindness?
Did that make any sense? No? O well, Randi’s needs to stop listening to the voices again =D
Part of the beauty of the blogoshere is its spontaneity, and largely uncensored nature. It’s up to consumers of a particular blog whether that blogger makes statements that might appear unsubstantiated. The bottom line is that in pop music, as cutthroat as it is, there is no such anumal as “bad” or “inaccurate” publicity. You are correct to point out that much blogging noise is much better to leave out; otherwise, readers are left with a much-cluttered landscape.
@celestia: Yes..those photoshopped pictures of Ai completely freaked me out. I guess the reality is that there will forever be people like that on every forum.
@Bluesky: Good job! lol But yeah, first impressions ARE really hard to get over, and perhaps that was the problem of the person I’ve been quoting all along. If I knew that person was a new fan, I wouldn’t have said a thing. The reason why I was all omg over it was because I knew that person has been following H!P longer than I have.. And even after I tried explaining a watered down version of this post, it didn’t do a thing. ^^;
@Radicalpatriot: You’re enlightening me with great points as always. Perhaps I need to widen my own perspective and be glad that I know what it is about my favorite members that makes me like them so much.
I must say though, Ai-chan’s thread in H!O is a little.. -_-… ergh, certain people need to stop spamming the entire board with Mizu pics.
If I wanted to see that, I’d go check out the pic board or flip through the photobook.
Well, you know, I can’t say I’m a very nice person.
But, when you see comments like those, just simple ignorance, the little things, I mean, perhaps your first reaction might be to step up and defend them. ‘Lookie here, don’t spew crap you don’t know!’
Take a step back, and just say, yeah, she’s grown up a lot.
The childish ‘bashing’ you can just sit back and lol at the person writing it. Because it’s usually really stupid and was probably meant to be made fun of anyway.
Honestly, I think I kinda got lost somewhere in that post of yours. But I can certainly identify myself with the bits and pieces of I picked up from it.
I <3 5/6 right now, and if you were to ask me anything about Koharu, or to comment about her.. I’ll probably say something like, wow! she.. she.. I don’t know, insert some retarded fact here. (“na~”)
Since I feel nothing for her, I won’t go out of my way to watch for her. Sure, I like the group enough, but if you ain’t catching my eye, then.. not much I can do about it.
Hell, after Gocchin graduated, I didn’t follow her performances anymore, I only watched her last concert because, well, because it’s her final release. Imagine the shock I went through.
“Whoa, this the same girl that sang Love Machine? Whoa, Morning Musume?”
btw – how to use sexy rocked. ines go watch it!
@Sevii: Yeah I understand. There are times when I go on Ai-chan’s thread and have no idea what to respond..
Sorry about losing you with this post lol..it wasn’t easy to write. I’m relieved that you can identify with some bits and pieces though, since there are and will always be people who missed the big point of this post. Doesn’t matter if you’re a MM newbie or expert.
Honestly, I feel nothing for Koharu either. So I really don’t know what to say about her besides “her Kirarin voice annoys me but she’s quirky..which is kinda fun when it’s not over the top.” lol
I’ll definitely go watch how to use sexy. :]
